10 Things to Do After You Install Linux

  • Install Multimedia Support

sudo apt-get install libdvd-pkg

also, install flash player

sudo apt-get install flashplugin-installer

  • Decrease SWAP Usage (unless you have more than 2Gb of Ram then don’t bother)

cat /proc/sys/vm/swappiness

  • Install Software to Burn CD’s 

sudo apt-get install xfburn

  • Remove Mono and Orca & Replace with Gnome Player

sudo apt-get remove mono-runtime-common

sudo apt-get install gnome-mplayer xpad

sudo apt-get remove gnome-orca

  • Disable Hibernation 

sudo mv -v /etc/polkit-1/localauthority/50-local.d/com.ubuntu.enable-hibernate.pkla /

  • Enable Firewall

sudo ufw enable

  • Install Bleach Bit to keep Your Install Fresh & Clean

  • Change Update Manager to Only Install Safe Updates

  • Install Chromium Web Browser 

sudo apt-get install chromium-browser

  • Update Everything This One Time

In the future you shouldn’t update this way because it just updates everything all at once but after a fresh install this is fair game.

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get upgrade
